What this work has to survive, and how we build for it.
- Water is the design constraint
- Irrigation demand decides what a garden costs to keep. Planting is chosen for what survives a Gulf summer on a sensible water budget, and the irrigation is zoned so thirsty and hardy areas are not run on the same schedule.
- Soil and salinity
- Sandy, saline ground drains fast and holds little. Bed depths, soil improvement and drainage are dealt with before planting, because a specimen tree that fails in year two was planted into the wrong ground in week one.
- Surfaces underfoot in summer
- Paving that is beautiful in a catalogue can be unusable barefoot in July. Colour, reflectance and material are selected for the surface temperature they actually reach beside a pool or on a terrace.
- It only works if it is maintained
- Landscape is the one scope that starts declining the day it is handed over. Irrigation controllers, access for maintenance and a service contract are part of the design rather than an afterthought.

The failure mode in the Gulf is rarely a single hot day; it is the cycle. Sustained UV, surface temperatures well above air temperature, salt-laden coastal air and airborne dust are what actually age a specification. That points to powder-coated or marine-grade aluminium over untreated steel, UV-stable composite decking or dense hardwoods over softwoods, mineral and stone finishes over organic ones in full sun, planting selected for salinity and low water demand, and fixings chosen for the corrosion class of the site rather than for the catalogue price.
