What this work has to survive, and how we build for it.
- Structure before finishes
- A pool is a water-retaining structure first and a surface second. Reinforcement, shell thickness and waterproofing are what determine whether it holds; the tiling is what determines how it looks. The first is not visible in any photograph and is where the money should go.
- Evaporation and water balance
- Summer evaporation is significant here, and a pool that is topped up constantly concentrates salts and chemicals. Balance tanks, level control and circulation are sized for local conditions rather than for a temperate specification.
- Plant room and access
- Filtration, dosing and heating need somewhere to live that can be reached, ventilated and serviced. Deciding that late means a plant room squeezed into whatever space the landscape left over.
- Safety and compliance
- Barriers, depth markings, non-slip surfaces and drain covers are governed by local requirements and by common sense. They are designed in, so they look like part of the pool rather than something added to satisfy an inspection.

Every question we are asked →Do I need a permit to build a swimming pool at my villa in Abu Dhabi?
Yes. A private pool in Abu Dhabi needs approval before excavation, and if the villa sits inside a managed community the developer's approval is required as well as the municipal one. DMT has a streamlined permit route for minor works on residential properties which covers swimming pool construction, and a licensed contractor can secure it directly. Safety requirements — barriers, depth marking, and the pool's own drainage and filtration provisions — are part of the approval, not an optional extra afterwards.
What should be planned before a pool is excavated?
The plant room. The filtration equipment, pumps, balance tank and their power and drainage need a location, an access route for maintenance, and a noise position that does not sit under a bedroom window — and all of that is far cheaper to decide before the shell is poured than after the landscape is finished. Waterproofing detail, tile finish, lighting circuits and the interface with the surrounding hardscape should be resolved at the same time, because each of them crosses into another trade.
