Every landscape in the Emirates is tested by the same four things, and none of them is the number on the thermometer. Sustained ultraviolet exposure, surface temperatures well above ambient air, salt-laden air near the coast, and airborne dust are what actually age an outdoor specification. A material that performs in a European catalogue is not thereby a material that performs here.
Metals: the corrosion class decides
Coastal Abu Dhabi is an aggressive environment for steel. Untreated or lightly galvanised steel in a pergola, a gate or a fixing will show corrosion long before it fails structurally, and the staining reaches the finishes around it first. Marine-grade or powder-coated aluminium and appropriately specified stainless steel are the durable answers — but the specification has to reach the fixings as well, because a marine-grade frame assembled with ordinary bolts fails at the bolts.
Powder-coat quality matters more than colour. A coating rated for high UV and coastal exposure holds its finish; a decorative-grade coating chalks, and once it has chalked the substrate is exposed.
Timber and decking: heat as much as rot
Softwoods move and check under Gulf UV. Dense hardwoods and modified timbers hold up considerably better, and UV-stable composite decking removes the maintenance cycle entirely. The variable clients notice most is not durability, though — it is surface temperature. Dark composite decking in full sun becomes uncomfortable to stand on barefoot, which around a pool defeats the purpose. Lighter tones, shading and a mix of decking and stone in the areas people actually walk on are the practical response.
Stone, paving and the pool edge
- Light-toned, low-absorption stone stays cooler underfoot and shows salt efflorescence less than dark or porous alternatives.
- Slip resistance has to be specified for the wet condition, not the dry one — the pool surround is the only place people walk barefoot on a wet floor.
- Jointing and bedding mortars need to tolerate thermal movement across a daily range that is wider than most product data assumes.
- Falls and drainage matter more than they appear to in a dry climate, because when rain arrives it arrives all at once.
Planting: salinity and water, in that order
Planting schemes fail here for two reasons far more often than any other: soil and irrigation-water salinity that the palette was never selected for, and an irrigation system that was designed for the plants at installation rather than for the plants at maturity. Species tolerant of salinity and low water demand, planted into a soil that has actually been tested, and irrigated by a system zoned by water requirement rather than by geography, is the whole of the answer. Everything else is maintenance.
A garden in Abu Dhabi is not finished at handover. It is finished at the end of its first summer — which is why we contract the maintenance as well as the build.
Outdoor lighting and electrics
Ingress protection ratings are the visible half of the requirement; the invisible half is dust. Fittings that are sealed against water but breathe are the ones that fill with fine sand. Buried joints, gland quality and the corrosion class of the fitting body are what determine whether an outdoor lighting scheme is still complete in three years, or whether four heads out of twenty have gone dark and nobody can face lifting the paving.
Specify for the site, not for the catalogue
The single most useful habit is to specify against the actual exposure of the actual site — distance from the coast, hours of direct sun on that elevation, whether the area is irrigated, and who will maintain it.
